The North Dakota Department of Agriculture’s Grain & Livestock Division oversees grain inspection; feed inspection and registration; livestock development and licensing; livestock pollution prevention; dairy and poultry; and meat and poultry inspection.
Among its many duties, the division licenses grain warehouses, grain buyers, grain processors and grain brokers as well as livestock dealers and livestock auction markets. The division handles the livestock pollution prevention and feed registration programs. The division inspects dairy farms, processing plants, milk transfer stations, milk bulk trucks, samplers, haulers and distribution facilities; inspects licensed commercial egg producers and licenses and sets bonds for hatcheries. The division includes the state meat inspection program, which inspects official and custom exempt meat and poultry processing establishments, ensures the meat industry achieves compliance with state and federal regulations, conducts in-commerce surveillance activities, works with the ND Meat Processors Association to expand the industry and provides consultation and education to the meat and poultry industry. The meat inspection program also contracts with USDA to review retail outlets for country-of-origin labeling and provide meat grading services.
