BISMARCK – Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring is reminding farmers with federal crop insurance that Tuesday, Dec. 10 is the United States Department of Agriculture’s Risk Management Agency (USDA-RMA) deadline for farmers to file their notice of loss with insurers for most spring-planted crops including corn and soybeans.

“Insured farmers that are experiencing a delay in harvesting their crop or have a potential loss should contact their insurance agents,” Goehring said. “Producers may choose to file a notice of loss before the end of the insurance period and request more time for harvest. Likewise, farmers may have lost production or quality issues and choose to file a claim and have it appraised. It is a complex issue and each farmer will need to evaluate their situation and act accordingly.”

According to Monday’s USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service report, corn harvested in the state was only at 36 percent, well behind 87 percent at this time last year and soybeans harvested were at 92 percent, slightly behind 95 percent last year.

More information on requesting assistance due to delayed harvest is available through your insurance agent or on RMA’s website at www.rma.usda.gov.
