The ongoing mission of North Dakota Meat and Poultry Inspection Program (NDMPIP) is to ensure meat and poultry products produced in state are safe to eat. NDMPIP staff utilize registration of establishments, inspections, testing of products, as well as enforcement activities to verify that meat products produced are wholesome, unadulterated, and properly labeled.
NDMPIP staff consists of the Meat Inspection Manager, two regional Senior Meat Inspectors, Public Health Veterinarian, Compliance Officer, and several Meat Inspectors located throughout the state. In addition to regulating meat processors, our staff ensure establishments maintain compliance with state and federal rules and laws governing the processing and sale of meat products. The Compliance Officer reviews stores, distributors, and warehouses to verify origin, wholesomeness, labeling, and proper storage of meat and poultry products. In addition, this employee also investigates consumer complaints.
ND has multiple levels of meat producing establishments. Official “Selected” establishments are inspected daily during production and are “equal to” USDA inspected establishments, products can be sold across state lines. Official “State” plants are inspected daily during production and are “at least equal to” USDA inspected establishments, products produced can be sold retail and wholesale within the state. Custom Exempt facilities are inspected on a regular basis products must be returned to the animals’ owner, no sales from custom exempt activities.
